NASA : Statement about Neil Armstrong




Neil Armstrong, Former NASA Astronaut and the First Person to Walk on the Moon, Dies at 82






Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon has died. He was 82.
Armstrong, considered an American hero, commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon in 1969.




The phrase he uttered that day as he stepped onto the surface of the moon, “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind,” became iconic.




A statement released by Armstrong’s family reads, “While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.”




NASA Administrator Charles Bolden’s statement offered condolences on behalf of the agency and praised Armstrong for his contributions to the nation and to space exploration saying, "Besides being one of America's greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us
